A model of the leech segmental swim central pattern generator

چکیده
We present a model of the single-ganglion oscillator of the leech swim central pattern generator (CPG). The model is based on the known neuronal architecture of this circuit. Free parameters in the model were "tted to produce membrane potential oscillations matching those seen during swimming. However, the oscillations produced are not robust to small ($5%) changes in the parameters. We propose that this may be due to the large di!erence between the passive time constant of our model cells and the period of the swim oscillation. We discuss possible ways the real circuit achieves robustness. ( 2000 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.

Beyond the central pattern generator: amine modulation of decision-making neural pathways descending from the brain of the medicinal leech.
The biological mechanisms of behavioral selection, as it relates to locomotion, are far from understood, even in relatively simple invertebrate animals. In the medicinal leech, Hirudo medicinalis, the decision to swim is distributed across populations of swim-activating and swim-inactivating neurons descending from the subesophageal ganglion of the compound cephalic ganglion, i.e. the brain. In...
متن کاملSegmental specialization of a leech swim-initiating interneuron, cell 2051.
The physiological and anatomical properties of an unpaired intersegmental interneuron designated cell 205 are described. Cell 205 is unusual among leech neurons in that it combines a variety of functional properties in a single cell. Constant current depolarization of cell 205 initiates and maintains swimming behavior in semi-intact leeches or the swim motor pattern in brainless, isolated nerve...
متن کاملAn Analog VLSI Model of Central Pattern Generation in the Leech
I detail the design and construction of an analog VLSI model of the neural system responsible for swimming behaviors of the leech. Why the leech? The biological network is small and relatively well understood, and the silicon model can therefore span three levels of organization in the leech nervous system (neuron, ganglion, system); it represents one of the first comprehensive models of leech ...
متن کاملSwim initiation in the leech by serotonin-containing interneurones, cells 21 and 61.
Two pairs of serotonin-containing neurones, designated cells 21 and 61, were characterized physiologically and anatomically in the hirudinid leeches Macrobdella decora and Hirudo medicinalis. Both of these cells are bilaterally paired interneurones and each cell is weakly electrically coupled to the other serotonin-containing cells both intra- and interganglionically. Cells 21 and 61 are excite...
متن کاملDetailed model of intersegmental coordination in the timing network of the leech heartbeat central pattern generator.
To address the general problem of intersegmental coordination of oscillatory neuronal networks, we have studied the leech heartbeat central pattern generator. The core of this pattern generator is a timing network that consists of two segmental oscillators, each of which comprises two identified, reciprocally inhibitory oscillator interneurons. Intersegmental coordination between the segmental ...
